Tom- Can you please clarify two rules?

1. If a player who has control of the ball loses a flag during play, is play stopped or not? Example: A QB is scrambling, and his flag falls off. Is he down where his flag falls off?

2. If a player has shorts or sweatpants with pockets, what is the ruling on the field?

The refs at Wakefield CLEARLY do not know these rules, and it has become unacceptable.

Can you please respond?

Thanks.

For the record, Rob Holland is the commissioner-laison for the officials & fields:

fcffl@vffa.com (attn ROB in subject line)

Having said that - player is down the second he is in possession of the ball without 2 flags on his belt, whether the missing flag(s) occured before or after he took possession.

NO POCKETS - 15 yard penalty.

Please contact Rob if you (or any other coaches) think any officials are not properly applying the above rules, or any other rules - do not use the messageboard and expect us to take action. When an official team rep contacts us with concerns we`ll take action, but we won`t take action based on posts here to the board as time and time again we later discover that we never get an accurate picture.

Shouldn`t

The plyer be down after the catch if he only has one flag after the completion. As long as a Def didn`t pull it before the ball arrived?

Yes, like I said as soon as he has possession of the ball with only one flag the ball is dead at that spot.

Thanks for the clarification Tom.

Just as an FYI, this IS NOT how the refs at Wakefield are calling the games.

Refs at all of the other fields seem to know this rule.

Again, thanks for the response.

My understanding is that the refs at Wakefield are NOT the group that is doing the other fields. The officials at the other fields are ones that have been doing the Fairfax League for over 25 years. At Wakefield this is a new group with no training or experience in flag rules or ever been “close” to state or nationals to officiate. By the way the “stick” that used in the state is a ¼ inch BY 3 foot long pvc pipe. So good luck at Wakefield.
