Great game last night to all involved. A genuine nail-biter with all the drama expected from two of the top teams in Fairfax.

CCR kicked off and promptly forced a three-and-out. CCR drove into Lazy territory before Yusef (Sef81) made a spectacular interception at the 20. On the play, CCR`s receive caught the ball just as Sef arrived, and he literally stripped the ball from him as they tumbled to the ground. The ref on the spot claimed dual possession and tried to award the ball to the Novas, but the head ref correctly overruled the call saying that Sef had sole possession of the ball when they hit the ground. Sundae stalled again and this time the Novas drove into the red zone before stalling and missing a FG. Lazy then went on a long, last-minute TD drive, scoring with 12 seconds left in the half on a pass from Yusef to a Sundae big man who had found some room at the back of the endzone.

CCR answered on the first drive of the second half, but not before long-time guard, 42 year-old Billy Bayne converted a key 4th down for the Novas. That conversion led to a new set of downs and the Novas hit paydirt on a 5-yd TD pass from John Hering to Melvin Cygan.

CCR held again and went on another long scoring drive. Key plays included a 30 yard pass to center Tom White, a ten-yard out to WR Dan Lordan, a nice run from RB Lonzell Offutt. On first and goal RB Pete Angstadt took a swing pass down to the one yard line. On the next play, CCR nearly scored on a RB option pass from Angstadt to Dave Szczesniak, but Sundae DB Deion was there at the last moment to bat the ball away in the end zone. On third and goal Hering rolled hard left before lobbing a pass to Cygan in the back corner of the end zone. The extra point made it 14-7 Novas with just under two minutes remaining.

Sundae got the ball in good field position at their own 30, but could only muster a 5 yard scramble from Yusef in the first three plays, which brought up 4th down and 5. Sundae converted on a 10-yard pass up the middle, and the Lazy offense came to life. Running a hurry-up offense Sundae used a series of short passes and scrambles to get into the CCR redzone. With 15 seconds left in the game, Sef bought some time and then found WR Jay Cobbs in the back of the endzone for the TD.

Knowing that a tie would put their regular season title hopes in the hands of Kerns (who play CCR tonight in the last game of the season), Lazy Sundae elected to go for two and the victory. A conversion would give Lazy the regular season title, while a failure to convert would clinch it for the Novas. Yusef took the snap, rolled right and then lofted a high pass back across field to Lazy Sundae big man Andre. The pass was not quite high enough and CCR DB Lordan was able to swat the ball away to secure the title for the Novas.

Great game Lazy! See you in the playoffs.

You had us scared Sef. You put your team on your back and damn near pulled a victory out of your hat. Essentially the game was a tie, but you all made the right call to go for two, because Kerns never showed last night and we won by forfeit. So a tie on Monday night would have done you guys no good. Fun game.
