tom

During our game on Wednesday @ lake ffx, an unsportsmanlike penalty was called on us for someone dropping the F*bomb on the sideline during one of our plays. The person who cursed was not on our team, but one of our fans. The other refs didn`t agree with this call, but the side judge definitely stood his ground.

My question is, was this the right call, without a warning?

Anyone who is a fan of a B+ team and taking it seriously enough to say **** on the sideline should not only be called for a penalty but removed from the field, and possibly the state.

dropping the F*bomb on the sideline

I would imagine that the fact they were on the sideline (vs. in the stands or not in a place which would make them obviously with your team) has something to do with it.

Who the language was directed towards, volume, children in the vicinity (whther your teams or not) and any proximity to the official also has a lot to do with it.

The officials are not required per se to issue a warning, though in most cases they will.

I do know this: if someone on your sideline standing with your team (player or not) drops an F-bomb a few feet from the official, that official cannot pretend to have not heard it.

There are not always bleachers at fields for people to sit in on some sides of the fields. It was an F bomb in conversation about something non football related. It was not directed towards anyone or an official. Any kids at a field at 10pm is pretty crazy to even think possible.

with the "lesson learned" guy, but the refs can`t just be giving penalties to anybody in the stands just because its on your sideline. At ALL the fields there are bleachers on one side and nothing on the other. It would be more understandable if the ref, asked that person to leave the field.

It was deserved...that guy was threatening me the whole game, he told me he was going to F me up in the parking lot after the game. I felt like my life was in danger. LOL Just Kidding......I joke, I joke....

If it wasn`t so loud and right in the refs ear...he wouldn`t have called it. But regardless if he was on your team or not, they will call that on your team. I`ve been hit with that in several games (in different leagues too).

IMHO the problem is the "rule" needs to be enforced consistently and not subjectively. It should be cut and dry, either it is or isn`t a penalty to curse which should clear up any confusion. I believe the refs tell all captains before the game no jewelery, no pockets, no cursing. The ref shouldn`t have to calculate what time the game was, is anyone else around, did he say it loud enough, who said it etc. to call the penalty.

Agree with greyhounds. The issue is the rule isn`t enforced consistently. If you`re going to call it on one person, be fair and call it on everyone. The refs set a precedence when they don`t call it.

AND if it`s a fan, I think it warrants at least a warning. After all, the fan isn`t a player in the league, he might not know the rule. And it`s unreasonable to expect teams to brief every person who comes out on the league rules, especially when they don`t always control who comes out. Ppl show up randomly. A warnign at the very least should be given to the fan first before penalizing a team.

Seriously

We played in a game where we were penalized 3 times for dropping an F bomb. Fine, we have mouths like sailors. Same game someone on the other team calls the ref a GD (used the whole word) idiot and wasnt called. Cursing is cursing. If they are gonna be anal about it, it needs to be called for all cursing, not just the F word...
