Just a thought

Just a thought, rather than dedicating one person taking stats per field, why don`t you have that person take video footage of the game instead? From the video itself, you can see all the stats + you will see the whole team recognized. I would personally pay the 7.50 a week to get videos to watch on the off season than to look at numbers.

Let me make sure I understand you on this. So for the same price that it takes to have someone stand with a clipboard and paper and records stats, you’re going to find someone to video record games? I’ll break down what will need to occur for that to happen for you. The first thing you will have to do is buy 3 camcorders (3 fields used per night). Then instead of having the stats put up nightly or the next morning, the video of the game will have to be compressed in a format that is viewable on the web. How long do you think that will take? It now takes Tom, on average, about 2-3 weeks to put up pictures from one game. I think the average was 3 hours per game or something like that. So you do the math. Next, these video files will require additional space and where do you think that space will come from? So if you can account for all that is needed to record games and have the video of the game posted nightly or the next day for $7.50 per team per game, I’m all for it. You’ll have my vote at the next coaches meeting.

you are correct my dear friend locs, but the camcorders are a one time buy, and also the compression does not take long depending on the quality (Settings for compression can be save and it takes far less time to do it the 2nd time around), the only time consumption it takes is basically the editing (but a mere kid can do that easily, its not hard with all the software out there, adobe, sony vegas, etc). Its just another idea, but if you get the videos down, there will be no need for a stat recorder at each game.

Also note that it is far more easier to record a game than to jot down notes. It is also far more accurate method to record stats as well. I get you on your justification that 7.50 is actually pretty cheap, and I agree it should cost more.

I actually run a couple of websites, space is not an issue to host files, there are tons of medians to host it, rapidshare, megaupload, even youtube, but space on a website on your own domain/server is not that expensive, Goddady itself offers 4bucks a month for 300gb+, each game recorded will not go beyond 1gb at max. You can purchase an unlimited data package plan for 10-20bucks more a month, and im sure teams that pays to get this will cover that.

Really the only cost to do this is the camcorders, an average camcorder runs around 500-1000$, the only labor in doing this is basically the editting and uploading (with verizon fios up speeds are at 15/20/30 or more and an average joe can afford it easily).

I agree 7.50 is cheap, but for 15 bucks a game, that might work out in the long run (average around 8 games for 15 is 120 bucks extra for team fees). And you know what, that might be more worth it than to read stats.

Also to broaden the discussion on the cost.

An average part time worker gets paid 6-8 bucks an hour at a store (The same skillset to do customer service, or to pickup trash or to fold clothes does not take anymore work than to stand for 45mins-1hr to record the games).

Labor to record games = 7 bucks an hour

Next, the labor to edit the videos (If you consider this a labor, at a deskjob, an average video is going to be 40-45mins worth of INGAME footage, and you are only merging the plays together, say you add a title and maybe credits or some fancy stuff, all which should take less than 1 hour and a half at most, I`ve done my own editing on my own football team video footage before and its simple as balls).

Labor to edit videos = 7 dollars again (This skill is not as hard as standing around moving the camcorder as above, and its basically a few easy clicks of the mouse)

Now for the compression, this is basically a 3 click process of a mouse, after all the editting is done, all is needed is to click on the button to call up your menu, then click the saved settings you customly design the first time around to compress the HD quality of your camera down to a sizable quality, then click the `OK` button. This process takes me 15mins for me on my current computer and the quality is still HD for me (I can give you example of my footages if you wish to see them btw). Say theres 40 games, 15 mins per game, thats 600 mins, which equals 6 hours of computer electric power you are wasting.

Cost to compress videos = 3 click labor = 1 cents per click + electric bill to wait for videos to come out.

Last but least, the file host, godaddy isnt the best web host out there but this should give you an idea on the cost of a monthly fee, note our season runs for 2-3months on average. http://www.godaddy.com/Hosting/Legacy.aspx?ci=9009

Cost to host the files = 45-60bucks for one season.

If I was at the team meeting, I would have brought this up, as for my team, we are not interested in the stats, it is way too inaccurate, as well as it means nothing to the players that does do work on the field that does not get represented in the stats.

lol (no I`m really laughing), I know who you are now. Sounds like you have it all figured out. If I were you I would make a business case to Tom and maybe he can contract you out to manage the video recording of games for a trial basis, like maybe for the playoffs, and see how it goes.

haha, does it matter if you know who i am? Its just a suggestion for the league thats all, if anything it will help out more than it will hurt, no disrespect or anything, im only throwing around an idea, but i am not going to go all out and make this happen because i am for sure not going to do this job. This is a forum/message board and it is meant for such uses, so why not voice my opinion?

Great talking to you bud see you on the field

We could do something independent of the league itself, where teams could directly pay someone to video and upload the games to a site they could then link to from their team pages.

Anyone who want to offer this to teams send me a message and I will include this in email going out to coaches today.

Hey "Lol":

If both teams are paying $7 per game for stats, then the hourly wage for the statistician is actually $14. Quite a difference in your minimum wage position at the local McChickenTacoHut.

DUMB IDEA. If you just record games, then someone still has to sit thru a tape of it and watch the whole thing to get stats. Who`s gonna do that? Thats still additional labor. This idea sucks. Keep the league how it is.

I was at the meeting. don`t forget the cost supplemented by the league for stat taking.

But like locs said put a plan together and the coaches will decide.

Good idea

It`s not that hard to tape a game. This is not going to be NFL films/replay. Al Bundy used to do it all the time. Just pause in between the plays and the intermission. The actual film time runs about 10 minutes long. How hard is that to upload? no editing required.
