So I’m sitting here with my Bud Light, waiting for my wings and pizza to be delivered and waiting for my Ravens to pull the trigger to go ahead and give up our first and third round draft picks for Anquan Boldin. And I’m sitting here thinking, what if we initiated a draft in this league? This is how it would work:

Prior to the beginning of each season we would take all of the names of the individuals on the free agent list and break them up into teams and have maybe two round robin games. The coaches that are interested in participating in the draft can come out to evaluate the talent in the game. The draft order would be based upon the standings. Last place team gets the first selection and so on. The teams that are not interested in participating in the draft can simply pass and the next team will have their selection. Also free agents that are not interested in participating in the draft or the evaluation talent games can simple pass as well. I’m sure there are some talented individuals on the free agent list that could benefit from this draft along with the teams that select them.

$41 million guaranteed and haven’t even thrown a pass. That`s crazy.

Here`s a question for you though, what if the free agent doesn`t like the team? Does he go Elway on them and force a trade?

The pictures with your number were setup by Tom. Drop him a line, I`m sure he`ll hook up the reigning state champs.

Now Locs, back to my question. I like the idea of a draft, but say I drafted you, and you didn`t want to play for my squad. What are your options? Just go back to being a free agent?

this is a tough idea to enforce since there are no binding obligations to stick with a team. Ultimately, players can play for whoever they want, and switch teams as long as it isn`t mid season.

i do think the idea of showcasing the free agent talent in a few pick-up games is a good idea though. existing teams can see free agents before adding them to the roster, and free agents can find a team to play on. it just might have to be an informal process of picking up players instead of a draft.

A free agent game is a great idea, but theres no way you could actually do a "draft". Itd have to be more like college football recruiting where the player ultimately decides what team he`s like to play for, based on what position he can play, PT, etc.

To combat against free agents pulling a John Elway, one suggestion would be to penalize a free agent for rejecting a team that drafts him. The penalty could be that the player wouldn’t be ineligible to play that season and would have to wait until next season to play with another team. I think the only thing that can immune that player from being penalized is if he starts his own new team. This also leads to the question; where would new teams be ranked in the draft order?

your draft idea isn`t going to happen. The way the free agen tlist is set up now is the way to go. Maybe a free agent exhibition game, but I can see all the FA`s not wanting to play any postion but the glory positions (QB, WR, S, etc). No one would want to showcase their O line ability if they hope to play WR.

you know this won`t work. drafting is stupid unless there were contracts involved. what`s to stop a "Free Agent" from joining a team and saying they were all friends in the first place? no team has any rights to any player.
